Custom Furniture

Commissioned work by R.M. Spaugh

I've been building furniture for over 30 years. What was borne of necessity was exacerbated by expensive tastes and limited funds. Ultimately it has become a very rewarding avocation.

I build practical furniture rooted in the arts and crafts tradition that began in Britain and flourished in Europe and North America between 1880 and 1910. I love the work of Charles and Henry Greene and the power of simple forms embellished with minimal, tasteful detail. I find great beauty in the curves and proportion of nouveau and asian styles and believe they blend well with the arts and crafts asthetic.

The pieces of furniture that we live with day to day should not only fulfill a practical purpose, but should elevate our quality of life by being functional, well-made, and beautiful. Well-made furniture should last at least at least 3 generations and my design and constuction techinques reflect that belief. I strive to create furniture whose proportions are pleasing to the eye and that possess a surface that begs to be touched.

I am currently taking very limited commissions due to a backlog of work and an ever-increasing range of educational endeavors. However, feel free to contact me if you're looking for something special.
